09.15.16: One M
MANY (WAY MANY!) YEARS AGO, I read in an expert typography book that proper paragraph indent for newspaper text need be only just so much. It said, in fact, that the indent should be only an em space, equivalent to the width of a capital M in the same typeface and size you are using for the text.
It’s a guideline I’ve always followed. To my designer’s eye, the text on the left is indented far too much, but that on the right is fine.
I’ve used the one M spacing as a rule for the 27 years I’ve been consulting, and never had a client—or a reader—argue that the indent is too little.
Check your paragraph indent. Does it need to be adjusted?
