YOU MAY HAVE SEEN the photo above on my blog earlier this week. It’s a striking picture. Now, take a look at the photo at the bottom of this hint. It, too, is striking.
But there’s something missing from the bottom photo. Space. It’s the vast loneliness of the Sahara that gives the top photo its impact and makes it memorable. Take away that space, as in the bottom picture, and it just lacks the feel of the top photo.
Now, I’m all for tight cropping. And I made that point in a hint here in mid-May (05.14.15: The photo in the photo).
But there are times when the space surrounding the subject of the photo becomes itself as much a subject of the photo.
I believe that is true in the top photo. And, no, I wouldn’t crop an nth off it.
