04.06.17: Say whut?…the answer
OK. I ADMIT IT: I’m surprised…and a bit disappointed.
I thought many more of you would jump in with a response to last week’s hint.
I asked: “Tell me what’s wrong here.”
Three of you responded.
From Marilyn Holman: “We are not supposed to split the letters in columns…Keep the whole body of the letter in the same package.” Well. Marilyn, I’m not sure I understand, so maybe you could get back to me and I’ll update this hint. I’ve always felt it’s OK to run the letters in a linear format, wrapping them over columns if necessary, all taking the same size and style of headline.
From Renée Tanner: “Letters to the editor — not letter.”
From Joel Martin: “Besides the singular ‘letter’ in the standing head?”
Renée and Joel nailed it.
Labels on letters (and obits…and briefs) ought to reflect whether there’s more than one letter (or obit…or brief) in the package. If there’s more than one, the label should say “Letters to the editor” or “Obituaries” or “Briefs.”
It’s just good common sense.
