WHEN WE CONSIDER applying a minus track to type, we’re usually dealing with text. The story is a few lines too long, so we begin tracking the space between letters to cram the story in. Not a good practice (we should edit instead), but it happens all the time.
As a rule, however, we rarely apply minus tracking to headlines. Depending on the design of your headline typeface, minus tracking may improve the look and make your headlines easier to read.
In the example above, I’ve used the same typeface in both headlines, and they’re both the same size.
