KERNING CORRECTLY takes a good eye, good taste…and some experience. No one gets it right the first time, even the first few times.

“I wanted to send this front page I did a couple weeks ago. Due to a lack of good photos, I had to get creative with graphics. I’m especially pleased with the money graphic in top story. I also came up with the delinquent tax sale graphic at bottom of page. What do you think?”
The page follows, with Ed’s comments below.
1. I thought the delinquent tax notice teaser at the bottom was an ad…and didn’t pay it any attention until seeing your note mentioning it. Only then did I realize it was not an ad. The reverse with the very thin type here doesn’t help. I hope it printed better, but I have doubts.
2. I like the graphic in the top package a lot. I believe it works very well to drive home the point of the story. It’s clean and to the point. But I think it might have been better had the graphic been placed to the right side of the package, like this:
Moving the graphic to the right gets it away from the subhead and byline and gives the page better balance, what with the veterans photo already at left.
3. Why is there a thin triple line and then a heavy single line below the nameplate? One is OK…the other redundant.
4. The Toys for Tots logo doesn’t add any information. It’s just a logo…and dull at that.
5. The election results teaser at the top left is w-a-y over-designed. There’s far too much typography and the election box graphic is anachronistic. The dotted red line adds to the clutter here.
6. More on typography: You have far too much of it here. By that, I mean too many fonts (some of them funky fonts, as in the teaser at the bottom and the “election results” type at top left). The Ashe headline is in Aachen, the Your Money graphic is in Antique Olive, the teaser at bottom is in a typewriter font. The “Former superintendent…” subhead is in an entirely different font. Your headlines and text are in various fonts of Palatino, which is w-a-y out of date. Even your bylines are in different typefaces from first line to second and third. I recommend an entire typographic overhaul. Until then, the People-Sentinel will remain in the 1980s.
