FROM KRISTIN: This Sunday we are running a story and package about the 40th anniversary of the big fire that destroyed The Times and Democrat. The whole page is dedicated to this feature. I’ve already done the layout for this page but I don’t know if I overdid it. Can you look at it and tell me what you think? The publisher wants to view it before it prints, so it has to look good. Let me know please. Thanks.
FROM ED: Sorry I couldn’t get to you sooner…in workshops all day here in Charleston. My thots: Nicely done…but a bit much for me. If I were a reader of the T&D, I really wouldn’t care THAT much about what happened at your paper 40 years ago. This much appears just so very self-serving. If it were your feature front, maybe…but ALL of PAGE 1????? I think not.
FROM KRISTIN: Thanks for the comments. I’ll talk with my editor. Might be a little late because the publisher has already seen it and she loves it. I had the same thought you did. I guess I wanted someone to back me.
So…what do you think? Do you believe your readers would really care that much what happened to YOUR newspaper…40 years ago? Do you think this story is worth all of page 1? Would you do this…or not? If not, how would you handle the story?
